Potato chips may be very Tasty but not very Healthy.Why?.
When potatoes are fried, they lose water through evaporation and gain oil making it gain a 15-20% weight of fat. This same fries are much salted and spiced making it undesirable from a dietary standpoint.
Guess what, the oil used to fry may not be an olive oil. What about the fact that they sometimes 'over fry'(smoke) it. What then is the waste of time in spending much on it?..the taste?
Anytime you stay away from potato chips you saving yourself a trip to the doctors and a hug expense one would pay for the treatment of stroke which is caused by high cholesterol that is gain from potatoes chips that we soo love.
Chronic diseases
caused 60% of the 58 million deaths worldwide in 2008. Globally, healthcare
costs are mounting at an astronomical rate, but mostly these costs are in areas
of preventable diseases.
It is a well known fact that 70% of all Doctors visits are
nutrition related (i.e cardiovascular
problems, digestive disorders, diabetes, strokes, arthritis, migraines, cancer,
obesity, insomnia etc) and many of these diseases such as HIV, TB,
diabetes, arthritis etc can be greatly improved with good nutrition.
With fast foods franchasies springing up at ends of the streets, Mr. Biggs, Nandos, SFC, KFC etc we are abound to see more lifestyle diseases in our society and the sad thing is majority of this disease are not covered by the National Health Insurance and if they, do trust me you are better of without it.
Grab some boiled nuts, roasted cashew nuts or some fruit if there is a strong urge for a quick bite. Resist the temptation, this could save you that trip to the operating room, whiles you could be with your love ones sharing the best of moment.
Remember to please spare all those people that your admission at the hospital as a result of bad eating habit will cause, the worries, the valuable time that will be spent in nursing you back to health or the eventual pain that your death will cause your love ones.
The power is yours. It sound like Captain Planet right, yeah it was my favorite.

I love what you are doing here, bro! As an American Registered Nurse, I concur with 98% of what you stated here. Nutrition is a very complex subject and the human digestive system is even more complicated. As a rule of thumb it is best to live by this standard. Anything in excess can kill you. Do not succumb to gluttony on any level. Anything in moderation, with proper exercise, is fine for your health. It is not the potatoes in fries (as Ghanaians refer to "chips") that are unhealthy. Potatoes have a high nutritional value by themselves, unfortunately they taste a lot better when fried in oil. You can fry them in olive oil or palm oil, which are high in the right kinds of fats (called HDL's or high density lipoproteins) and can actually help to counteract the effects of bad fats. To fry anything in corn oil or vegetable oil is frying with high content LDL's (Low density Lipoproteins). These LDLs are the ones that stick to the walls of your arteries and build up plaque which can eventually lead to heart-attack and stroke. Please see the following:
ReplyDeleteCholesterol is a type of fat found in your body. Your total cholesterol is made up of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.
LDL is called “Bad” Cholesterol because it can build up in the wall of arteries. This narrowing can slow or block blood flow and increase your risk of heart disease. High LDL (Bad) Cholesterol is a major cause of heart disease.
Artery
HDL Cholesterol is called “Good” Cholesterol because it helps remove the LDL (Bad) Cholesterol from arteries.
Triglycerides are another type of fat found in your blood. High levels of triglycerides are also unhealthy.(found in the oils that are used by KFC and SFC). Although the fried chicken at KFC may taste great...it is very poor for your health. Learn how to read nutrition labels, but don't stay away from potatoes!!!!
Keep in mind that certain risk factors add to the effects of LDL (Bad) Cholesterol and put you at a greater risk of heart disease. Your doctor or health care professional can give you a more detailed explanation.
thanks Akweley, that was very insightful.i.e. LDL
DeleteI admit potatoes themselves are not bad by it the grease in which they are fried that makes it unhealthy.
