Only the best is good enough for Ghana.

Kwasi Kyei Darkwah (KKD) once said if you show a bottle on TV too long, every one will want to be that bottle or have that bottle. Now, this goes to show how strong an influence TV and the airwaves has on us. If that is the case why are we still watching Mexican soaps and now Philippine soaps, why are aren't we showing more of the our local productions?.

I know most of our local productions are bit 'crappy' but hey! what do you expect when they are working with minimum finance, tools and basic skills. When we continue to watch irrespective of how bad they are, it will get better by the episodes, how ?.Well, the producer will get the opportunity to gain sponsorship, no matter how little it may be and this will go a long way to improve the production. Most Ghanaians are good at criticizing and they will do what they know best, we have a way of bringing out the best in people example Asamoah Gyan. lol. Currently, most local productions are much more interesting as compared to those soaps showing if not better.

I am not a fun of those that call on the Government for everything and my reason is, we get very comfortable easily and should the Government hand things to us all the time, we will not push ourselves but rather will want the Government to spoon feed us. The only time we come out brilliantly is when there is competition and when we find ourselves in a very difficult situation, that is when the Ghanaian excel. ( well after a few nagging and complaining)

If we say the local production are not good enough and that they should be taken off air, then we might not be able to improve because as there will be nothing to work on. We have to continue with these local production whiles encouraging quality, originality and relevancy to our society. This will give birth to other interesting production not seen nor heard else where.

I remember the days of TV Theater, Akan drama, Obra (wait, was akan drama the same as Obra or they were different? ) NAFTI and Show Case in Ga etc.  Then there was only one station GTV, the big TV. I hated it then but there were times I love sitting behind it because it provide quality entertaiment for the family unlike these days where anything at all can be shown on TV. I love the stories specially told in the TV Theatre Shows, they were well written and also has a way of making viewers better people. Does anybody remember Inspector Bediako, Ultimate Paradise etc ? Great series.

ok, back to what i was saying before i got carried away. The heaping and exposing of the breast as a fashion craze came about as a result of these Mexican soaps. That should have woken us up but nooo we let it go and focus on other stuff but we forget that what the viewers see is what they want be. It just like kids these days don't want to listen to Hilife or the burger Hilife, they say now they don't want Hip-Life nor GH Rap but Hip-pop, crazy!, why? because they are day in and out bombarded with American rap with or without meaning and relevance.

The solution is we should look within and bring out the best that uniquely identifies who we are. I strongly think we should revert to the policy of the Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, where radio plays and TV shows 80% local content and 20% foreign. This I believe will help change this ills in our society.

  1. So many reasons why this is so. Our inferiority complex is at the root of our denying our own inheritage & longing for others. Mothers applause & proudly don their children's work no matter how poor the workmanship because the mother knows that it's only the beginning. As the child is encouraged, he'll grow up, mature & polish that gifting. Let us truly love mother Ghana & be proud of our food, customs, handiwork.
