Any body that study #African culture or art knows it is centered around communication. We communicate a lot hence everything of ours is a medium of communication, from arts to dance.
Our houses are closely knitted. In my villages, Big Ada, when you open your widow wide enough you will be looking into your neighbour's compound. That is no privacy to the modern day person but for them it was ideal. when you neighbour hears strange noise coming from your end he or she can come out or asked from his compound if you are ok ? That is security right there.
Our whole lives is centered around interacting with neighbours. It is very common to get a call from a mother, Grandmum or an Auntie and all she wants is to know how you doing, and this will take more than 5mins. On several occasion I've had calls from love ones wanting to know how I am doing and if I have eaten, for some strange reason they think I don't like eating.
Being quiet or not greeting is a sign that there is something wrong with you, it is unheard of, it does not mean you want to be left alone, you must be seen talking.
"hey! what is wrong with 'Asimesi', "he's been quiet today, is he alright? " they will ask.We just love to talk.
Now you know why the communication business is booming in Africa?
Mobile phone penetration in Africa has been on the rise since the 90's and this is shown in the on going acquisitions and mergers all over. In Ghana alone there has been 4 acquisition, MTN buying Areeba, Vodafone buying Ghana Telecom, #Airtel buying Zain and #Expresso buying #Kasapa. The total number of mobile phone companies now in Ghana stands at five. With this number, one would have thought the consumer will be spoil for choice in quality of service and call rates but this not the case.
Every where you go there is one advert or promotions after another, all geared toward gaining more subscribers. One would have thought these service providers will focus more on retaining the current customers with quality service and better offers that build loyalty from product satisfaction. For the best form of advert is by word of month from a very satisfied consumer. They should learn from Apple how they do their advertising. "Good product sell themselves"
In short reduce your advertising budget as well as your overhead cost and put the surplus into quality services and lower call rate. This is text book economics, if all things being equal, the lower the price, the higher the demand. Yet they don't get it.
The average Ghanaian now have more than two phones and has 4 out the 5 service providers sim cards. Hence the joke "you are not a Ghanian till you have two phones". Loyalty is out and replaced with 'who gives me a better option'. those who claim they are the market leaders must stop being nostalgic and get to work.
Some are with the opinion that tax cuts will help. We as customers agree that Government must help but I am not in favour of Service Providers not showing any effort to help themselves, remember "he who climbs a good tree is given a push"
No Government will cut down their taxes if all they do is put money in senseless beauty pageant (not to say don't support the entertainment) also paying so much in bringing foreign entertainers .i.e Amber Rose. then paying pea nut to the local entertainers.
I wish I had varied options but am stack with Expresso for now, at least they give me FREE night calls and free credit at the beginning of every month. Their rate might not be 8pesewas but they give me something to smile about every month and I am not worried if I loss my phone which I had, twice but got it back.
